A new six-week Skilled Trades Academy has been established to provide specialized training for veterans and military spouses looking to transition into civilian careers. The program focuses on high-demand trades including HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), plumbing, electrical work, and construction, with participants receiving OSHA certifications upon completion.

The academy represents a targeted effort to address both the growing demand for skilled tradespeople across the country and the specific employment challenges faced by military families. By offering comprehensive training in multiple disciplines, the program aims to create clear pathways to stable, well-paying jobs for those who have served.

Comprehensive Training Curriculum

The academy’s curriculum covers four major skilled trades areas, providing participants with foundational knowledge and hands-on experience. Students receive training in HVAC systems, where they learn installation, maintenance, and repair of heating and cooling equipment. The plumbing component teaches pipe system design, fixture installation, and troubleshooting common issues.

Electrical training focuses on wiring, circuit design, safety protocols, and code compliance, while the construction portion covers framing, finishing, and building techniques. Throughout all modules, safety practices are emphasized, culminating in OSHA certification that makes graduates more attractive to potential employers.

Addressing Workforce Needs

The skilled trades have faced persistent labor shortages in recent years, with employers struggling to fill positions that require specialized training. According to industry data, the demand for qualified HVAC technicians, plumbers, electricians, and construction workers continues to grow as experienced professionals retire and building activity increases.

“This program directly connects veterans and military spouses with careers that offer stability and growth potential,” said a program representative. “These are jobs that can’t be outsourced and are needed in every community across America.”

Support for Military Families

The academy specifically targets veterans and military spouses, two groups that often face unique employment challenges. For veterans, the program offers a structured transition to civilian work that builds on skills many developed during military service. For military spouses, who frequently relocate due to service requirements, training in portable skilled trades provides career options that can move with them.

The six-week timeframe was designed to be intensive yet accessible, allowing participants to quickly gain marketable skills without extended time away from the workforce. This condensed format recognizes the financial pressures many military families face during career transitions.

“After serving our country, veterans deserve clear pathways to civilian careers. This academy gives them practical skills that employers need right now,” noted an industry partner supporting the program.

Industry Certifications

A key component of the program is the inclusion of OSHA certifications, which are required or strongly preferred by most employers in the trades. These certifications verify that graduates understand workplace safety regulations and best practices, reducing liability concerns for hiring companies.

The academy also helps participants prepare for additional industry-specific certifications that may be required in their chosen trade, providing a foundation for continued professional development after the six-week program concludes.

Graduates leave the program with a combination of practical skills, safety certifications, and job placement assistance. Early results suggest strong employment outcomes, with many participants receiving multiple job offers upon completion. As the skilled trades gap continues to challenge American industries, targeted programs like this academy may become increasingly important in building the workforce of tomorrow.
