Citi has introduced “The Reserve,” a special collection of hotels available exclusively through its travel portal. Access to these select properties is restricted to customers who hold specific Citi credit cards.

The banking giant’s travel platform now features this curated hotel collection as a premium offering, creating an additional incentive for customers to obtain and maintain qualifying Citi cards. While details about the specific properties included in The Reserve remain limited, the collection appears to be positioned as an upscale benefit for loyal Citi customers.

Card-Based Access Model

Unlike publicly available hotel booking platforms, The Reserve operates on a restricted access model. Only cardholders of certain Citi credit products can view and book these properties through the company’s travel portal. This approach mirrors similar strategies used by other financial institutions that offer exclusive travel benefits to their premium cardholders.

The exact criteria for which Citi cards qualify for access remains unclear from available information. However, this type of tiered access typically aligns with premium or travel-focused credit products that carry annual fees.

Travel Benefits as Customer Retention

Citi’s introduction of The Reserve reflects the growing trend among credit card issuers to enhance travel-related perks. Financial institutions increasingly use exclusive travel benefits to attract and retain customers, especially those in higher-income brackets who travel frequently.

By creating a gated collection of hotels, Citi adds value to specific card products while potentially negotiating preferred rates or benefits with partner hotels. For consumers, such collections can offer:

  • Access to curated properties that meet specific quality standards
  • Possible preferential rates not available to the general public
  • Additional benefits during stays, such as room upgrades or credits

The strategy also helps Citi differentiate its travel portal from third-party booking sites that don’t offer such exclusive collections.

Competition in the Credit Card Travel Space

Citi’s move with The Reserve puts it in direct competition with other major credit card issuers that offer similar exclusive hotel collections. American Express has long maintained its Fine Hotels + Resorts program for Platinum and Centurion cardholders, while Chase offers its Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection to select cardmembers.

These exclusive hotel programs have become increasingly important competitive features in the premium credit card market, where issuers battle for customers who spend heavily on travel and dining.

For hotels, participation in such collections can provide access to high-value customers and create an additional distribution channel that doesn’t compete directly with their own booking systems.

As travel rebounds following pandemic restrictions, credit card companies have renewed their focus on travel benefits, with exclusive hotel access representing a key component of their premium offerings.

The introduction of The Reserve suggests Citi is strengthening its position in the travel benefits space, creating additional value for cardholders while building stronger relationships with hotel partners.
