I just was working on a Splash screen and following an example in a book.
The App failed to start because I copied a style tag that began with "android:Theme" but my activity was using AppCompat.theme.

The point is the style you defined for your theme may not be compatible with the type of activity.

Are you simply changing your theme using the theme icon when you are in Design view? That should be a safe way to make the rendering change styles.

I ran into a similar problem last week . It turned out the SDK manager did not install the support library.

I know this doesn't tell how to fix your problem but I am not an Android Studio expert and I really hate when I have to focus on the IDE instead of writing code.

Is your blank template extending Activity or one of the other Activity descendants? Try changing to plain old Activity and see what happens.
