Looking for suggestions

0 Eyvette Thompson · July 1, 2015
Good afternoon, everyone.

As i understand now, the xcode_6.1.1.dmg will not run on Windows, so i am considering purchasing an old Apple laptop to use for these tutorials and to assist in future app development when needed.  Since I already own a couple of Windows laptops, I don't want to spend a lot of money.  Can you suggest something that i can use to support the app software and future development?  Any specs would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Eyvette

Hi Eyvette,

I was once in a very similar situation.

I recommend buying an old or second-hand Mac.

Benefits:

  1. You won't have to worry about it not working, you can guarantee that xCode will run natively on your system.

  2. You won't spend megabucks on it, you can find some older Macs for quite cheap. (I say cheap for Apple products, not so much when compared to PCs obviously)

Which Mac To Buy?
You want a Mac that can run Xcode 6.0.1+, so here are my recommendations:

Xcode version 6.0.1 -> 6.2 = OS X Mavericks
List Of Macs Eligible For OS X Mavericks:
iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch Polycarbonate, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)

Xcode version 6.3 -> 6.4 = OS X Yosemite
List Of Macs Eligible For OS X Yosemite:
iMac (Mid 2007 or later)
MacBook (Aluminium Late 2008 and Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later; 15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later; 17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)

I hope I was able to guide you in the right direction.
All the best!
