PHP was released in 1995 whereas node js released in 2009. they both are usually used for developing web based application as a server-side scripting language but node js also used for desktop application development platform.

The strategy uses by PHP and Node js is Interpreted compilation and Just in Time Compilation using V8 respectively.
PHP is good in mixing the content and deep code content than Node js. It is the simplest  language where no client app is needed.

Node js is separating concerns. It is also required newer code for modern features. Moreover, it is quite complex language than PHP. Service calls are thinner than HTML fat PHP calls.

Just learn both. The big different is that NODE.JS is faster then PHP. But PHP has more future, i recommend you to learn both.

1.Learn Php
2. Learn Node.js

Node.js is a platform built on Chrome’s JavaScript runtime for easily building fast, scalable network applications. Node.js uses an event-driven, non-blocking I/O model that makes it lightweight and efficient, perfect for data-intensive real-time applications that run across distributed devices.
