If you are attempting to learn SQL and say PHP or C# at the same time I suggest when you write your SQL statements that you first use the query builder on whatever DB you are using  i.e. PhPMyAdmin, MS SQL Management studio or PG Admin they all have query tools.  They will most likely give you a better description of your errors and point you in the right direction.

Here, Here!  I am currently using ACCESS with my applciations, which are written using Visual Basic.  Both ACCESS and VB have excellent tools for queries.  Having said that, I am just now getting really started with learning SQL so that I can go beyond what you can get from the tools.  For simple queries they will do everything that one needs.
