I am fairly new to java programming, and I was just wondering if anybody has any beginner ideas for exercises to help better hone my skills, or just small project ideas?

1) Build a timer in Java.

2) Implement sorts like bubblesort, selectionsort, insertsort, mergesort and quicksort

3) Read and write to a file.

4) Set up an input and output program like a calcuator. It doesn't have to e fancy, just make it do something.

5) Set up a basic cipher program by substituting characters. ex. a for b, b for e, g for z ...

I know these might sound complicated, but they're not actually that hard except maybe 1 if you've never used your own classes. The others are actually straightforward and not as hard as they look.
