when i did that, it said this:

E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

also, It won't let me import javaFX classes or packages in my code, which makes me think it didn't work. what should i do?

According to http://www.webupd8.org/2012/09/install-oracle-java-8-in-ubuntu-via-ppa.html, it's as simple as adding their PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install oracle-java8-installer
