I heard that Flash and ActionScript are very similar. How are they different?

actionscript is a language, which can be compiled into a SWF(Shock Wave Flash) file which can be read and ran by a Flash player (most likely the browser plugin 'flash player'). AS3 can also be used to make apps via adobe air.

Flash is the platform.
ActionScript is the language you use to program for the platform. Basically.
