This book was written in 1791 and is metaphorically graphic.  and truly illustrates the demented mind of Sade. He was actually sentenced to prison by Napoleon for writing this book.  
If that's not your cup of tea, try David Fishers "The War Magician" which is a true story about a real life magician who is in the British Army in World War II and tells a tale of how he tricked the enemy with elaborate camouflage stunts.

I would have to say the series that left the biggest impression on me is the Harry Potter series.  As far as a single book goes.... Of Mice and Men perhaps.
