I am using the programming language db/c.  I load the mysql command into a variable and then it is passed to mysql.  It seems procedure that I need to establish the connection to the server, then I must do a "selection connection" with the table name to establish connectivity and then I can perform the mysql function.  Is this the general procedure for mysql?  I am presently getting an error that connection to the database has not been established.  I know it has because I load values from a table.  So, I am looking for a general process technique.  I am a newbie and my company has no funds for classes.  I am taking online tutorials, but I have not seen anything on this.
