Ah nevermind, I didnt know bucky was using slick. Travises applet game tutorials just teach you how to make a game only using java with no extra tools to make it easier. Slick is an engine designed to make it easier to create a game.

From the slick website:
Slick2D is an easy to use set of tools and utilites wrapped around LWJGL OpenGL bindings to make 2D Java game development easier.

Either way I think making a small game with no tools first is a great way to get the concepts around game design before jumping into an engine.

Try the Java Game Applet tutorials by Travis. It may be for an applet but its pretty much the same thing and he covers a lot of things you will use in every game you make.
