Linux Suggestions

Thinking about moving from win8 on my really really crappy lap top to some linux version. It will be used mostly for programming purposes, especially Ruby On Rails and that type of stuff . So I am looking for something lightweight and at the same time sort of nice to look at :) Any suggestions ?

Linux Mint is stable and well supported, that would be my suggestion, and it's based on my own experience using it.
MATE edition is quite lightweight, and the XFCE is probably even more.

Try with LiveCD / LiveUSB and see if it fits.

Fedora is in my opinion a great OS for working on. if you use the full install dvd and install the developer packages, it comes with a few IDEs pre-installed as well as testing servers etc.
