Notice: rules are currently being re-wrote. IntroductionWelcome to the big thread of stuff about TheNewBoston.com. In this thread, you can find vast amounts of information about TheNewBoston.com, including the rules, how it started, and why it exists; and general statistics. Thread is split into four sections; and you can find what those sections hold by reading the section index, a general brief about each section. If you encounter any mistakes, please send me a message and I will fix those accordingly. Thank you and enjoy the read. Section A: It's all about TheNewBoston Section B: The people who look after it Section C: Frequently Asked Questions Section D: Rules and policies Section E: Trivia Section G: Programs Section A: It's all about TheNewBostonWhat is it? TheNewBoston.com is a community of people who are interested in the IT field. These people are very enthusiastic about computing, and the general IT area. Together, we serve as a community who helps each other with their problems and also visitors. Many of these people take inspiration from the person who started it all in the first place, Greg "Bucky" Roberts; who started a YouTube channel to teach many people how to program, make computers, and show it is not just something geeks do. Many people find it hard to get college, and so they turn to Bucky to teach them. We, TheNewBoston, everyone, wants to help Bucky with this; we want to be a community that helps other people for free; and what drives us is the pleasure of helping others.
What do we offer? TheNewBoston.com offers vast amounts of knowledge in nearly every area of IT. People of the TheNewBoston.com will mostly come from the YouTube community, by watching Bucky's videos. Someone will learn a language, by watching Bucky show the basics; and then that person will make something combining the basics that Bucky shown, and then show the community what he/or she did. It's all about sharing; and returning what we were taught back to the community of TheNewBoston.
Where did it all start? TheNewBoston.com was created by Bucky due to hundreds of requests from his video viewers. The original plan was to allow Bucky to communicate more effectively with his fanbase; to try and target what the video viewers want. But, ever since the community has grown, it has turned into more of a giving community. The community is rather young, the forum was opened in 2010; however TheNewBoston has been around for about 3 years.
Who started it? A person called Bucky or Greg Roberts, 23 years old from Raleigh, North Carolina in the United States. Bucky started a YouTube channel in 2008; the exact reason is not known, but is a channel where users can find tutorials related to computing. Bucky has created over 900 videos; mostly of them are tutorials for programming languages, which show users how to program in a certain language by showing the basics and some examples of a program running in that language. The channel is apart of the YouTube Partnership Program; the exact date and reason when it was partnered is not known. However, the reason might be due to the channel's style.
Goals and future? TheNewBoston.com wants to remain a community that offers knowledge to other people who are interested or just need help with problems in the IT area. The community will grow every day, and we want to be the number 1 resource on the Internet for free, open-source tutorials. A person will come on TheNewBoston, that person will learn a language, and that person will show their creations and more things. You see, you will not be good at making stuff just knowing the language, you need the creativity; and there are people who have this creativity; but cannot learn the language because of poor educational needs, and just problems with getting into college. We want to help people learn for free.
Section B: The people who look after it Who are we? The staff who look after TheNewBoston.com are people from different areas of the world, they are not paid; they simply work for the benefit of the community.
System Operator The System Operator or SYSOP is the person in charge of the server, and the website. Their should only be one person at any given time, and that person is currently: Bucky.
Administrators Administrators are people who have higher powers; they mainly conduct maintenance on the forum and create categories and other places where users will create threads and replies, etc.
The current administrators are: - Mark, who joined the TheNewBoston community on Sunday, 16th May 2010.
Moderators Moderators are people who ensure TheNewBoston.com remains a safe environment for everyone and also enforce the rules given in section D. They are also people who users can contact if they are experiencing problems with the forum or have complaints about other members.
The current moderators are: - applebees, who joined the TheNewBoston community on Friday, 14th May 2010. - Berylac, who joined the TheNewBoston community on Sunday, 16th May 2010. Berylac is also the head of the moderating team. - KrisTheSavage, who joined the TheNewBoston community on Sunday 16th May, 2010. - lhatcher, who joined the TheNewBoston community on Friday 14th May, 2010.
Members Members are people who make TheNewBoston.com what it is. Without them, their is no need for a moderator or administrator. If I could name them all, I would; but theres far too many of them. But, this group is the most beneficial group to the TheNewBoston community.
Can I be apart of it? If you are a member, then you are. If you want to help out with other parts of the community, you can look out for applications. But if you are a member, then you are apart of the team. Because without you, the contributions, there really is no meaning for TheNewBoston.
Section C: Frequently Asked Questions Does Bucky take requests? Yes, Bucky will do requests. However, if the request is aimed at a different language that Bucky has no knowledge of, it may not be fulfilled.
Where can I find the source code? Source code to the tutorials is scattered all over the forum. Originally, a section strictly for the source code of the tutorials was being constructed to hold the source code. However, that was scrapped since it would take far too much time, and be a big resource in space on the servers.
We also want to try and make sure you learn from these tutorials, and so we ask you to watch the videos and code while Bucky shows you what you are doing. It aids the process of learning the subject in the video quicker than if you just copy lumps of code and just run it.
All these questions are put in place for people to read, before they contact a member of staff.
